The Teacher Certification Process as defined in the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Standards provided an opportunity for celebration in December 2014. Catholic Education had three teachers who qualified for certification as either Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher under the guidelines provided by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership. In addition one of these teachers, Domenique Laurendi was the first in the state to gain this qualification. Domenique is also the first accredited teacher to become an assessor in the program.
The AITSL program is built around three main principles: seeking to improve the effectiveness of teaching, creating career paths for teachers and influencing the public perception of teaching as a career. This is structured at four separate professional levels. Two of these are Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher status. Individual teachers who achieve this level of qualification display an outstanding level of teaching capacity as well as the ability to greatly influence the work of their colleagues. Those who are successful in this program display professionalism in their daily work that reinforces the fact they are the best in the profession.
The development of this initiative has been shared across the three education sectors and has proven to be an outstanding example of cross sectoral cooperation. As the work of AITSL becomes commonplace in schools, more of the teaching workforce will come forward to have the quality of their expertise formally recognised.
