Open Week
August 4-10
A series of one-day workshops were held across metropolitan and regional SA aimed at supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families as they explore an array of post school opportunities.
The workshops invited Years 8 – 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parent/caregivers, Vocational Education Coordinators and Focus Teachers to attend these interactive and informative sessions. 45 students attended the workshops held at Tauondi College, Port Adelaide and at Caritas College, Port Augusta to allow access for mid north schools. Students who attended all said the day was ‘very good and helpful in getting them to think about their career choices’. One student said ‘it was an awesome day talking to people, and what we need to do to get into Uni and TAFE, what subjects I need to choose for my chosen career pathway.’ Another said he ‘was surprised about the range of opportunities and financial support given to Aboriginal people seeking work in the trades or Uni.’ There was unanimous support for these workshop days to continue.
The workshop allowed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their Parents/Caregivers, Focus Teachers and Vocational Education Coordinators to:
• further improve their understanding of post-school opportunities
• make informed career and study choices
• assist in the transition from school to post-school opportunities
• increase the level of understanding of Aboriginal employment programs
Catholic Education SA (CESA) through the Vocational Education and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Teams is committed to supporting Indigenous students, their families and relevant school personnel in this important area of successful ~transitions and outcomes for Indigenous students. Indigenous students from all Catholic secondary schools were invited to participate in the workshops.
The Vocational Education Team and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Teams would like to thank the generous support of all school staff that assisted to make these days successful. A special thank you must go to the school Career Counsellors and to the presenters whose enthusiasm and commitment ensured the success of each of these workshops.
