Supporting Literacy
For the last 18 months Kildare College has benefited from the support of Marie Davis in her capacity as EAL Secondary Cluster Coordinator. Marie’s role was new in 2013 and represented a different way of supporting schools who did not qualify for an EAL Network Teacher. It would be fair to say that the College did not know how this would work, and neither did Marie but her support has been invaluable.
Building Staff Capacity
Marie has worked with our English as an Alternative Language (EAL) Key Teacher, Zefi Pezos, and other staff at the school to build their capacity in levelling students using the new Language and Literacy Levels across the Australian Curriculum: English as an alternative Language/ Dialect (EALD) students. Maintaining a focus on literacy, Marie has also run staff workshops on ‘Supporting Secondary Students in Reading’ and ‘Reading Digital Texts’, skills that all teachers have been able to apply across the curriculum.
Supporting Science Teaching
In 2014 Marie has been acting as a ‘literacy buddy’ for Kildare’s Science Coordinator, Annette Lamont, who has a keen interest in how literacy can be scaffolded more explicitly in Science to enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Science specific genres more effectively. It has been a pleasure to host Marie at Kildare College in her Coordinator role. Whilst she has missed working directly with students, the focus on building capacity in teachers to support literacy and EALD students will have better results in the longer term.
