Environmental Education

St Catherine’s School has recently received an NRM Grant for the instillation of 3 Garden Beds outside the Senior Class. Senior Students, Kai, Rebecca and Sarah have been the driving force behind this process with the help from Environmental teacher, Mel Lehmann. Kai, Rebecca and Sarah worked with Mel to investigate which beds we thought would be suitable, what was required to set up the beds, to gain quotes, write the application, draw scaled plans and then when successful ring and order the materials to be delivered. In Week 7 the beds were fully functioning with our donated plants blossoming.

The students have written about the process:

Over the past couple of months we have been working on developing the area across from the senior classroom into garden beds. We firstly worked with Crafers Garden Centre to work out which garden beds we wanted to purchase and what materials we needed to fill them. We researched different products that would suit the environmental needs for the area. We got back in contact with Crafers Garden Centre after we knew which beds we wanted. They advised us on what we needed to fill the garden beds with; they quoted us an overall price.  This led to the application for the NRM grant. Ms Lehmann and a group of us students worked on the grant, measuring the site, costings and diagrams of the proposed site. We put it in last term and had our fingers crossed.

In Week 4 we found out we were lucky enough to receive the grant with NRM. So in Week 5 we called up Crafers Garden Centre to order everything we needed, including the beds. Week 6 saw our materials be delivered and the senior class filled the beds, first with rocks and then with soil. Each bed has been separated into fruit, vegies and herbs. Crafers Garden Centre kindly donated the 14 lots of seedlings that we have planted.

We would like to thank Ms Lehmann for helping us to get the grant and for guiding us with her environmental expertise.  Also Crafers Garden Centre for their help in costings, delivery and donations.  We can’t wait for them all to grow so we can use our produce in some delicious cooking.
