Early years education forum

Thirty seven delegates from 18 Catholic Education Offices participated in the inaugural National Catholic Education Early Years Education Forum in Adelaide on September 3 and 4 2015.

A highlight of the program was an exploration of the CESA Stimulus Paper, Children: Close to the Mystery of God led by Rev. Dr James McEvoy. The session led to ongoing discussion and supported the integration of pedagogical, cultural and political topics throughout the forum.

Other speakers included:

  • Paul Johnson, Eco Literacy Teacher at Galilee Catholic School, Aldinga who shared his research in the area of learning and nature linked to Children: Close to the Mystery of God and Laudato Si.
  • Cathie Harrison, Australian Catholic University (ACU), and Sally Harrison, Broken Bay Diocese, who presented their research and practice in the area of parent engagement and transition to school.
  • John Mason, Senior Manager Policy, Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), who presented an overview of policy directions and information about Catholic participation in the provision of early years services.

Throughout the two days, each Diocese shared initiatives and aspirations. This brought the Dioceses into closer working relationships and participants agreed to create an ‘online clearing house’ for continued sharing of resources.

Through her facilitation, Joce Nuttall, ACU, continually challenged the group to reflect on and consider the links between family, parish and school and the uniqueness of Catholic identity.
