Three Catholic schools awarded SA Architecture prize

Three Catholic schools have been named as winners at this year’s South Australian Architecture Awards for their recent building projects.

McAuley Community School, Loreto College and Blackfriars Priory School were recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects, who award projects that have a considerable impact on the communities they serve and demonstrate generosity toward the broader public.

McAuley Community School, Hove was awarded a Commendation for Educational Architecture for their whole school design by Swanbury Penglase.

The exterior and internal learning spaces of the 6 Green-Star rated school celebrate its coastal location. The interior’s connections to the surrounding landscape have created an exciting student-centred environment for young learners.

Loreto College, Marryatville were also awarded a Commendation for Educational Architecture for their Breda Byrne Wing upgrade designed by MPH Architects.

The upgrade breathed new life into previously dark and dated spaces providing natural light and improved visual connection and transparency between spaces. MPH Architects also realised an opportunity to provide an additional outdoor learning space.

The refurbished spaces provide learning opportunities that are contemporary, comfortable, and flexible in a vibrant educational environment.

Blackfriars Priory School received a Commendation for Interior Architecture for their Aquinas Centre designed by Swanbury Penglase.

The interior spaces are designed to encourage collaboration and interaction between students and teaching staff through the removal of traditional barriers.

The interior feels more like a tertiary environment, with a high quality of detailing encouraging students to take pride and ownership of their learning environment.

The SA Awards are part of a national awards program run by the Australian Institute of Architects that recognises the innovative work of architects and promotes local architects and architecture across Australia and internationally.
