St Raphael's launch into 2021 with STEM Workshop

St Raphael's School Parkside has launched into 2021 with two free STEM workshops for children aged 4 to 11 years old and their parents/guardians. These sessions were hosted by Ms Deborah Hansen, the Numeracy and STEM Coach at St Raphael's School. Deborah has over 15 years' experience teaching and is currently leading the Numeracy and STEM programs at St Raphael's School. With her passion for inspiring children to inquire, Deborah supports children to think critically and creatively, and develop their collaboration skills through carefully planned experiences designed to engage children of all ages.

Deborah explained to those attending the workshops that when STEM is introduced to students from Reception, it allows them to understand their thinking, ask questions, explore and evaluate. “Children are naturally curious and need to be encouraged to be creative and critical. Our children need to be prepared for the 21st century and to do this, we need to ensure STEM is a major focus in our teaching”. She said, “a STEM education allows students to learn new skills and acquire the knowledge they will use to solve real problems in the future.”

Both sessions were booked to capacity with almost 60 children “flexing their thinking”, solving problems and finding solutions to STEM challenges using robotics, engineering, and construction.
