St Michael’s College was privileged to host James Morrison and the James Morrison Academy Jazz Orchestra at the College’s senior campus, for a student workshop and sold out public performance on 21 September.
Morrison was appointed a Member of Australia for “services to music, particularly jazz, and the sponsorship of young musicians" in the late 1990s and continues his quest to develop new jazz talent. As well as yearly sponsorships for young musicians, Morrison also visits schools where he performs with music students. The visit to St Michael’s College included a student workshop / rehearsal with the virtuoso followed by a concert that night. James showcased his multi-instrumental talents during the 2.5 hour performance with St Michaels’ wide array of bands and choirs.
This was another highlight for the St Michael’s Big Band 1 who recently took out a gold medal at the ABODA SA Schools’ Band Festival. Matthew Monti, aspiring young trombone player and member of the St Michael’s Big Band 1 is delighted with 2016 jazz opportunities.
“What an amazing year so far. Firstly being a gold medalist and now performing with James Morrison, who is an absolute jazz genius!” Matthew said.
