Rostrevor College is set to host a 'Battle of the Bands' competition on May 13 in support of Catholic Education Week.
The event is open to all Catholic schools in South Australia, with Rostrevor inviting schools to perform via their rock/stage bands, choirs and dance groups.
The event is an initiative of deputy head prefect Steven Oh who initially planned to hold an internal competition.
After consultation with principal Simon Dash and 2016 prefects, Rostrevor decided to open the event to other schools as part of Catholic Education Week celebrations.
Steven says the event aims to "create an atmosphere where everyone is unified under a harmonious heartbeat".
"Recently I was blessed to see my guitar idol Noel Gallagher perform with his High Flying Birds at Adelaide Entertainment Centre," he says.
"It got me thinking, what can we do, as a college community, that can promote not only our school spirit, but also inclusively accomodate various other Catholic schools?" And so the Battle of the Bands was born.
Eight other Catholic primary and secondary schools are sending a variety of acts to the concert. They include: St Aloysius Primary Choir and Stage Band, CBC Senior Choir; St Mary's Senior Rock Band, St Paul's College Junior Rock Band, Rostrevor College Senior and Junior Rock Bands, St Francis Xavier Rock Band and Senior Ensemble, Loreto College Year 10 Rock Band and St Francis of Assisi Choir.
Rostrevor College Principal Simon Dash praised the event saying, "I think it is a fantastic initiative, led by our student leaders and is an opportunity to bring Catholic schools together in a friendly non-competitive environment to celebrate our common identity."
"I know our prefects will do a fantastic job and it will be a night to remember."
Entry to Battle of the Bands will be a gold coin donation and all funds raised will benefit Catholic Charities. It will be held on Friday 13 May, 2016 from 6pm - 8pm at Rostrevor College's undercover basketball courts next to Purton Hall gymnasium.
Reception students who join a 2024 mid-year intake at a Diocesan Catholic school will get free tuition in Terms 3 and 4.
