Beautifying the streets of Brompton

Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Brompton has been beautifying the streets surrounding the school with the 'Stobie Pole Project'. Here’s what they had to say about it:

The aim of our project was to develop a visual display of our Missionaries of the Sacred Heart Charism for all to see.  We developed this project to coincide with Catholic Education week – as we wanted to help to beautify the streets surrounding our school.  One thing we would love people to know is what our school stands for... We are basing all the Stobie Pole art on our 5 pillars – which are hope, love, justice, inclusivity and connectedness.

Our two year 6/7 student project managers, Juliet and Sylvie invited the all students from Reception to Year 7 to create a design. Students then combined various aspects of the designs to create one for each pillar. They oversaw the project with the help of their teacher Felicity Koeroessy.

Sylvie and Juliet described the process further:

“In terms of painting, we began with a base coat of grey. Then, on top of that we did a different colour on each - this was the background colour for each pole - a very light purple, skin colour, green, blue and red. Mostly the students from year 6/7 (plus some from across the grades) had an opportunity to paint the designs on.  This was done over time and was very dependent on our weather during the winter.”

We worked on this project in conjunction with the Croydon Paint Bank and City of Charles Sturt. Sharon Heffernan for the Croydon Paint Bank said “……I love the fact that the students are designing and painting the poles around your school.”

The paint was supplied through the Paint Bank - who supply local residents and businesses with paints to decorate their stobie poles.

IHM are continually grateful for the continued partnership with community groups and the council to further enhance our school and create a colourful representation of what our school stands for.

“I think the paintings are pretty good and the streets are much more friendly now.  They remind people about our wonderful school and what we stand for”, said Sylvie upon completion of the project.

One of our neighbours, Jacqui Hunter has commented about how much she loves the Love Hearts on the stobie pole near us - as they “create a sense of community connectedness”.
