Students from 14 Catholic schools in the western suburbs participated in the launch of Caritas Australia’s 2018 Project Compassion Lenten appeal this month.
In a liturgy conducted by Archbishop Philip Wilson, primary and secondary student representatives were provided with Project Compassion materials, including collection boxes, to distribute to their school communities.
This year’s Project Compassion theme celebrates ‘A Just Future for All’ in conjunction with the Year of Youth.
Archbishop Wilson said the launch of Project Compassion always reminded him of the fact that while it was used in many countries throughout the world to express solidarity with people who are poor and in need, it began in Adelaide.
“It was a group of people in Adelaide like ourselves who back in the 1960s saw the need to do something to reach out to people, and so they began what’s become known as Project Compassion,” he said.
“It’s something enthusiastically carried out by the Catholic people of Australia in ways that are quite remarkable.
“It’s really an expression of loving our neighbour and loving our God, about coming to people with no expectation of any return.”
The schools launch of Project Compassion was held at Nazareth Catholic Community senior campus on Tuesday March 6.
