Liam Parker is off to International Science School in Germany

Gleeson College Year 12 Science student Liam Parker has earned himself a month- long international trip to Science Summer School in Heidelberg, Germany. Liam is one of just three Australians to receive this prestigious opportunity this year. His selection follows  his participation at the 2015 Australian National Youth and Science Forum held in Canberra in January. Liam enjoyed the experience so much, he decided to apply to attend the International Program held in Heidelberg.

Last Thursday Liam was informed that he was chosen to participate in this amazing International learning journey. Liam will join 24 other students from Europe, Asia and North America in the research-based program.

Mrs Grace Napoli, Science Coordinator at Gleeson College said that staff and students at the College commend Liam on this truly outstanding academic achievement and wish him all the best, as he prepares to travel overseas to further extend his learning, and future opportunities, in the area of Science.

Liam’s successful online application allowed him to comment on the areas of Science that he is particularly interested in and how he wishes to contribute to those areas in the future. Liam’s Science ambitions extend to inventions to help disabled people to walk and to further the field of sustainable energy production.

“I listed my main areas of interest as powered exoskeleton suits, such as those used to allow disabled people to walk again, and research into Nuclear Physics to learn more about the field and how it could be safely applied for energy generation”, Liam said.

Liam sees that his trip to the International Science School could assist him in honing his directions in Science:

“As the International Science Summer School Heidelberg is a research based program, this will undoubtedly be a great chance to figure out exactly how I can contribute to the world of Science”, Liam said.

Liam’s teachers see him as highly motivated, having a positive attitude and dedication to his studies and they recognise his passion for Mathematics and Science. Liam’s Physics teacher, Mr Nathan Ackan recognises his significant abilities: "Liam has ability and passion to define, quantify and explore Physics concepts", he said. His Mathematics Teacher, Mrs Nancy Mastrogiacomo added:
“Liam’s outstanding achievement is a true reflection of his ability to think logically and problem solve, not only in a classroom environment, but in application to “real world” contexts”, she said.
