Students explore factors that shape a person’s identity and their sense of belonging. They investigate differing views of being Australian from different times and different perspectives and they build a picture of diversity and change over time.
Link: We Are Australian - Introduction
This is a unit of five lesson plans about Australian national identity. The first one sets the scene and the others explore themes such as the Australian identity over time and Australian traditions and diversity. The activities are designed to be flexible; they can be completed as stand-alone exercises or used as an integrated set.
The EAL/D students in the classroom and their families are the local community, and their experiences should be part of exploring diversity and thus acknowledging diversity as normal and every day. Parents are a valuable resource for sharing information in the classroom.
