This series - Elements of Music
12 x 45 minute lessons via videos with teachers’ pack and downloadable additional resources

This series introduces the six key elements of music including rhythm, texture, dynamics, pitch, form, and timbre. Children will build their knowledge of basic music techniques through a set of fun activities based on each element. Each video uses bright animation, practical demonstrations and easy to understand explanations to captivate young students

Teacher Notes

Students’ active participation in Music fosters understanding of other times, places, cultures and contexts. Skills and techniques developed through participation in music learning allow students to manipulate, express and share sound as listeners, composers and performers.  

Teaching Points: 

  • Listen to a piece of music and try and identify the different instruments 
  • Investigate who is making the music 
  • What kinds of sounds can you hear?  E.g. tiptoe sounds, big swirly sounds? 
  • What does the music make you think of? E.g. ways of moving, feelings, animals 
  • What rhythms can you make? 
  • Paint to music. E.g. splat, swirl, dot, long curvy lines 
  • Make musical instruments from kitchen materials (or junk materials) 
    • Saucepan lid 
    • Oven tray 
    • Metal cup 
    • Dish drainer 
    • Bamboo steamer 
    • Wooden/metal spoons 
    • Pasta/rice shakers 
  • Explore different sounds. E.g. loud, soft, fast, slow 
  • Use your body to make sounds. E.g. click tongue, tap feet, clap hands
