Inquiry Question

How can I sort my world?

Learning experience

Your child can be learning numeracy skills as they help put away the shopping. Where do the canned goods go? Will they all fit? Do you put the tinned tomatoes all on one shelf and the baked beans on a different shelf? What needs to go in the fridge or the freezer? Talk about why some foods need to stay cold and some foods don’t. Which items belong in the kitchen, the laundry or the bathroom?

Why is this important?

Putting away the shopping can be a way children sort and categorise. They will be noticing similarities and differences and making decisions based on storage needs and use. They will also be working out how to stack or fit items into cupboards and developing estimation and planning skills. If you are telling your child where to put the shopping they will be learning to follow instructions.
