Inquiry Question

Why do shadows change?

Advice for Educators

Shadows are a great source of noticing and exploring ideas about time. When the light source moves the shadow changes. It might become fainter or blurrier or it might change in length. Observing the changes and documenting is a form of scientific thinking.

Advice for Parents

On a sunny day go outside and look for shadows. It might be a tree, a building or a person who is casting the shadow. Talk about how the shadow looks. Is it long or short, faint or dark? You could draw around the shadow or take a photo of it. Come back later in the day. Has the shadow changed? Why do you think that might be?
