4.3 Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating

Preschool Numeracy Indicator: I measure and compare my world

Inquiry Question

How can I record the distance something travels?

Advice for Educators

Measuring and recording is one way we have of making comparison and checking theories. When children roll balls, throw beanbags or push a car along they can use a ruler or tape measure to see how far it went.

Recording the distance gives children a chance to use numerals in a meaningful way. They can make comparisons between how far different items went.

Advice for Parents

Encourage your child to roll a ball, throw a beanbag or push a car along the ground. Mark where it started and finished. Use a tape measure or ruler to measure how far the object went and help your child write the numeral on a piece of paper. Try again and see how far it goes this time. Was it closer or further? A bigger number means it went further.

Think about how you could make the object go further. Could you use a ramp for a car? Could you roll the ball with two hands? Could you throw really, really hard?
