Inquiry Question

Why do we need to write lists?

Learning experience

Ask your child to make a list of grocery items the family needs, encouraging them to ‘pretend’ write or to use the letter/sounds they already know.  Read the list together and talk about the things you need.  Take this list with you as you shop together and refer to it.

Why is this important?

Children need to see the function and purpose of writing in their lives. List making demonstrates how writing features in daily family life and serves the purpose of helping to remember what needs to be bought. When the shopping is brought home children can help unpack and store items which involves further talking and categorising.
