Schools celebrate National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Catholic schools across the State have recognised Reconciliation Week in many different ways including:

Caritas College, Port Augusta

The College held a National Reconciliation Week assembly. Year 5 and 6 students retold The Kingfisher Story and Junior School students sang a song about caring for the earth.

Galilee Catholic School, Aldinga

Year 3 and 4 students from Galilee joined with others around the Southern area to share their reconciliation message through art. The students’ work explores the theme “don’t keep history a mystery” and is on at the Hopgood Theatre, Noarlunga until June 3.

Miss DiMauro’s learning group also learned how to weave with the knobby club rush (Ficinia nodosa). Miss DiMauro was excited to pass on the knowledge, tradition and stories that were passed on to her by a Ngarrindjeri elder many years ago.

St Brigid’s Catholic School, Evanston

Students at St. Brigid's recognised 'Sorry Day' on Monday May 28. They have also taken part in various school and community events.

St Francis de Sales College, Mt Barker

Students in Years 4-12 celebrated with a special liturgy. Guest speaker, Mr Shane Tongerie, was inspirational and shared his own family story.

St Joseph’s School, Payneham

St Joseph’s Payneham has celebrated Reconciliation Week with Indigenous Artists working with classes, a whole school photo mapping out the indigenous flag and a special Reconciliation Assembly.

St John Bosco School, Brooklyn Park

Each morning this week students have begun the day with prayer to celebrate National Reconciliation Week and Catholic Education Week.  A fire has been lit as a focus point for each gathering as students have explored themes of reconciliation.

Catholic North Western Community schools

Catholic Schools, both primary and secondary, had representatives gather to celebrate the spirit of reconciliation at Mt Carmel College - where they celebrated Mass and shared in a delicious lunch.

St Mary's College, Adelaide

This year’s Reconciliation Week theme “Don’t Keep History a Mystery,” connects with St Mary's school theme of “Truth Seeking Through Dialogue.” The community gathered together on Monday morning to celebrate the significant steps taken on the journey towards Reconciliation. In coming together, listening and learning from Indigenous brothers and sisters throughout the week, asking questions and informing each other about our history, the school focused on opening up hearts and minds to reconciliation.
