On Monday 29 June, six Christian Brothers College students were invited to attend the UniSA Magill campus for the State Finals of the Brain Bee Challenge and they won the Team challenge! The Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) is a competition for high school students in year 10 to learn about the brain and its functions, learn about neuroscience research, to find out about careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses.
The program was started in Australia in 2006 to address a number of deficiencies in the public's perception of science in general, and neuroscience in particular.
Yianni , Ashton , Yiani , Sriram, Sean and Matthew made up the CBC Team. These students participated in both individual and Team Challenges throughout the day as well as being able to tour the neuroscience facilities at UniSA.
The day would probably go down as one of the hardest competitions the students would compete in, as the questions asked were of an extremely high standard.
Yiani was the standout individual as he made it through the first 2 rounds and into the top 4. After the third round he was tied for third place and entered a question shoot out (first correct answer wins) with Cabra. This went on for 6 questions until finally Yiani was unable to answer the question correctly and Cabra did, giving him a fantastic 4th place of 41 students.
The Christian Brothers College team answered the call and went above and beyond. The team of Yiani, Matthew, Sriram and Yianni were able to make it through round 1 and into the top 3. The top 3 were neck and neck throughout most of the final round, until the champions were announced and CBC stood atop the rest proudly lifting the trophy high.
Overall the day was a great success, with each student giving their all in every round. Importantly too they were also given a rare insight into neuroscience.
