On 8 April St Joseph’s School, Payneham will officially open the 2015 ANZAC Trail to remember the commitment, sacrifice and dedication by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp (ANZACs) to the security of our country. The trail is both an historical and discovery experience to salute 100 years of service and to recognise the contributions of all people to our country. The entire school has participated in establishing the various aspects of the trail together with local business sponsorship. This commemorative trail has been designed and created to forge meaning and build identity from this region’s perspective and to honour the contribution of local people.
The school recognises the South Australian Government and the contribution of the ANZAC Day Commemoration Council in particular for the grant that helped to fund the trail. This ANZAC Trail, together with the historical research by the Middle School students, has uncovered many stories showing the courage and sacrifices of those in the past who have contributed to our country and its present identity.
The school itself has five families and one staff member who are ANZAC descendants. As part of this history project students have uncovered many stories and they have spelled out the important message using maritime flags: “Lest we Forget”.
