New Patrons for the Marine Discovery Centre

The Marine Discovery Centre (MDC) proudly announces that Professor Chris Daniels and Kaurna Custodian Karl Winda Telfer have accepted the role of Patrons of the MDC, Star of the Sea School, Henley Beach. MDC acknowledges the marvellous contribution of Barbara Hardy AO, leading environmentalist, who is retiring as inaugural Patron of MDC since 1987.

Professor Chris Daniels
Professor Chris Daniels is very passionate about marine education and is fully supportive of the diverse work of the MDC. He particularly inspires younger generations to learn more about and care for our coastal and catchment environments.

Chris is Professor of Urban Ecology at the University of South Australia and is the Presiding Chair of the Adelaide & Mt Lofty Ranges National Resource Management Board. Chris is a prolific scientist and author, having written or edited nine books and contributed to more than 150 scientific publications. Chris is also an award-winning science communicator. He has regular sessions on 891 ABC Radio, and has written for The Advertiser on a range of scientific and environmental topics.

Karl Winda Telfer
Karl Winda Telfer is a Kaurna man from the Adelaide Plains region who has worked closely with the MDC developing an interactive website game featuring Kaurna knowledge and understanding about coastal life. He has also provided his advice with our Kaurna Learning Station.

He is a senior custodian of ceremony, a cultural educator, designer and artist. He has been involved in Aboriginal cultural and spiritual renewal all his life, coming from a family of strong cultural and political activity. He is known in the community as knowledge holder of the Spirit Fire - the peace lore fire of Tjirbruki - a great creation ancestor within his country. Karl founded the Paitya Dance Group which has toured internationally. He was invited to participate in The Tracking Project (www.thetrackingproject.org), a forum of international educators and Native Elders from around the world to design a series of teachings, which connect individuals directly to the natural world.

Bi-Cultural Learning
MDC has two outstanding and inspirational Patrons in Chris Daniels and Karl Telfer. They will enable MDC to move forward with bi-cultural learning and sharing of knowledge. MDC is grateful to both men, as they are outstanding people who excel in their various fields. With their guidance MDC will continue to evolve and grow.
