Cardijn's Cultural Project

Artist works with Cardijn students to create a shared space that reflects the College’s Catholic and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity.

Cardijn College’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Team, in conjunction with the Art Faculty, have launched an exciting new project within the school. A culmination of ideas and CESA projects has allowed the two faculties to join together in the creation of a shared space, reflecting our Catholic and Indigenous identity.

As part of the Investing in Focus Schools Project, Cardijn has been involved in a number of activities which promote the well-being resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, as well as leadership in teaching and learning and, most importantly engagement and connection with the wider community. The final element of this project is to create a meeting place in the heart of the school amphitheatre.

The meeting place will reflect our connection to the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Kaurna People and the various Language Groups which represent our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. While the project is still in consultancy phase, it is hoped this meeting place will contain a fire pit and feature various seats organised in a circle. These seats will be covered with mosaic tiles, designed and created by our students with guidance from Susan Roberts, a parent and member of the Kaurna Community and artist in residence and local ceramicist, Connie Giacoumis. Long term plans for this project will see the meeting place surrounded by a garden made up of plants significant to our local area.

Cardijn is very excited to embark on this journey and welcomes contributions from the wider community.
